Parenting: Is Discipline Necessary?
Proverbs 29 gives some encouragement and warnings about Discipline. Maybe some of you grew up with no discipline and some grew up with unhealthy discipline known as abuse. But in either situation, I want to encourage you to reconsider the importance of disciplining.
Discipline drives harmful thinking and habits away and Discipline invites and instills right thinking and doing.
Discipline isn't about being a power-hungry ruler that squashes everything you don't like. Healthy discipline is about stewarding over the longterm success and purpose of that young person that God has entrusted into your care. Discipline will bring a better quality of life for your child and you. Take a look at a few verses from Proverbs 29.
A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother. Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire. Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction. (Proverbs 29:15, 17, 18 NIV)
So maybe you are saying, "I'm with you and I want to embrace a healthy track of discipline." Well there are many different ways to go about it. First studying how discipline was implemented in the Bible and then here are a few other resources I recommend for parents.
Raising Champion Children - Pastor Kevin Gerald
If you are reading a blog like this it's obvious that you love your kids or want to be a good parent in the future. So lets commit to not leave our kids or teenagers undisciplined. I know first hand with having two little beautiful daughters that it would often be "easier" to just give them what they want and give into their fits and temper tantrums. But I'm reminded first off of the responsibility to God to raise these little champions up right and I also consider the possible negative future for my daughters if I let them go on undisciplined.I know Good Parenting isn't easy but it's worth it for everyone involved. I'm praying for any parents who read this who have a prodigal child out there; I'm praying that they find their way back home
.I'd love to hear from you on any parenting resources that you have found helpful.
Remember, God is our great heavenly father and is available to us. Pray and ask God for wisdom in raising your family.
