Choosing Great Leaders in A Woke World

When choosing a leader, I don’t care what color or which gender they are—if they are the most qualified and best fit with the team then I choose that person.

You select a leader by internal qualities not external appearance.

You will harm the organization if you choose team members based on appeasing social expectations. The critics applauded “woke” selection of people based on trivial attributes of race and gender, but then they disappear and you’re left hoping that individual can fulfill the work. Resist the urge to reduce people to their skin tone and gender; we all want the opportunity to rise and step into our calling no matter what we look like, but rather who we are and what we can bring to the table.

For years before all of the political correctness entered the scene, we selected people on values, work ethic, synergy with the team, skill and ability, flexibility, willingness to learn and key characteristics like that. Choosing someone off of race and gender is demeaning to the individual and damaging to the organization.

Take off the limits of who could take on a role in your organization and allow THE BEST candidate to rise to the top. If you select people because of factors that no one can control, you’ll create insecurity in those you select because they know they didn’t get the position based of merit and you’ll create resentment in the rest of the team because they’ll feel that person is there illegitimately.

And even better yet, look to develop those who are already with you and committed. We often waste time, resources and energy on onboarding new people who don’t have your culture rather than doing the work of investing and developing people to go to the nevel.

Create an excellent team and you’ll attract excellent people of all kinds!
